I was watching a documentary on Feminist Gloria Stienman in the the 1970s and saw a scene where a black women was arguing with a white man. She was standing her own even though the white man was comparably bigger than her. They then revealed who this spitfire sassy lady was: her name was Flo Kennedy and she was basically the first black feminist
“b. 11 Feb 1916, Kansas City, MO …. d. 22 Dec 2000, New York, NY
Feminist; anti-racist organizer; attorney; media activist
With righteous anger matched by a sharp and often foul-mouthed wit, Flo Kennedy modeled creative, radical resistance for generations of feminists. As a young attorney, Kennedy handled the estates of Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker, exposing record companies’ racist exploitation of successful black artists. In 1966, while most progressive activists were focused on the Vietnam War, Kennedy set up The Media Workshop to expose and fight racism and oppression in the American media. She organized pickets of TV stations, newspapers and their advertisers. At the first meeting of the fledgling National Organization for Women, Kennedy ruffled feathers by pushing the group to confront discrimination in the corporate media. She went on to found the Feminist Party, organizing such protests as the March Against Media Arrogance and the “Hollywood Toilet Bowl,” denouncing patriarchy and white supremacy in film and TV”
flo, you had me at “foul mouthed”
This. This tiny little packet of twenty eight pills is $108.99 worth of not being pregnant. Without insurance. With insurance, it costs anywhere from $80-$20. Per MONTH. That equates to $1,307.88 per year, without insurance. That’s fucking ridiculous. It should NOT cost that much to prevent unwanted pregnancies. And with Planned Parenthood losing more and more funding every year, how do they expect women to be able to afford this? Oh yeah. They don’t. Our country and the insurance companies and the pharm companies that are in charge here don’t give a shit. Our country seems to want all women to be completely co-dependent, barefoot, knocked up, and making them a goddamn sammich. You would think, that as time goes by, society would progress, rather than regress. I guess that’s too much to ask. I guess it’s too much to ask that They make things like contraceptives more readily accessible, rather than taking them away. They bitch about the teen pregnancy and STD rates in this country, but They refuse to DO anything about it. They’d rather sit back on Their ignorant, fat asses and exacerbate the problem by taking away funding and raising the price on everything to do with reproductive health and making the basic, HUMAN act of sex COMPLETELY taboo.
Oh, society… And we were making such progress in decades past…
Forgive my rant, but I’m kinda upset about nonsense like this.
Gaming journalist calls Duke Nukem Forever “disgusting,” slams it for “morbidly presented” and “unsettlings” rape jokes.
“Although it may get the feminists all riled up”
One level in particular takes place in an alien nest where Earth’s women are being inseminated by giant penises. The women writhe and moan in a fairly humiliating fashion, and they regularly sob with no small amount of implied misery. In essence, the women look like they’re getting raped. In fact, they are. That’s the big joke of the level. The aliens are raping the women to create babies. Now, I’m a fan of offensive humor, but the “joke” in this level is so morbidly presented, so dark and downright unsettling, that I simply do not know if Gearbox intends for us to laugh or to throw up. I certainly found I was in danger of doing the latter over the former.
By the time Duke Nukem finally makes a “You’re fucked,” joke, which he makes in front of two girls who are about to die in the process of getting sexually assaulted, Duke does not come across as cool, witty or likable in the least. He comes across as a vile, callous, thoroughly detestable psychopath.
Well, that’s disappointing.
Woah, what? For real?
I know Duke Nukem is all about the violence and politically incorrect jokes, but that isn’t cool.
compounded with the fact that its multiplayer features a “Capture the Babe” game that’s like “capture the flag” but instead of flags, it’s women dressed as schoolgirls. And when they get too “manic” the player has to slap them.
Duke Nukem Forever is a shitty game.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???? And people like… want to play this?
Wait, I found a little article about it…… one of the four multiplayer modes includes a misogynistic take on the capture the flag mode. Dubbed Capture the Babe, the multiplayer mode involves Dukes capturing the other Dukes’ babes. Being babes, they tend to freak out, and that can be rectified with a slap to their buttocks according to the magazine. Although it may get the feminists all riled up, this is certainly not the least of Duke’s controversial (read: awesome) themes.
I don’t understand why people think they’re so hardcore for being misogynist and pissing off feminists (or anyone with a scrap of decency at all).
It’s like well done on rebelling against the system by enforcing the patriarchy that’s been around for thousands of years. No really congratulations on that you must be real proud about how unique and anti-establishment you are.
God FORBID we should get “riled up”— “riled up”—! God FORBID we women should be fed up & sick of this misogynistic bullshit that people get to act like is “normal” & “okay”! God FORBID we women should be angry at not being treated like HUMAN BEINGS, but as objects that it’s okay to slap on the ass, & okay to rape. It’s okay! It’s “only a game”! It’s funny! Giant penises, raping women to death! Ha ha fucking ha!
Absolutely fucking disgusting. jfc.
The comments in this thread defending this are seriously just really, really stupid. Telling me that I am “butthurt” for thinking it’s not cool to rape and degrade women and screaming “BUT OTHER GAMES HAVE DONE IT GOSSSSSSHHHHHHHH ALL GAMES ARE MISOGYNISTIC!! IT’S OKAY!!” does not change the fact that this is so fucking bad.
Yes. I understand that it is Duke Nukem. I am not stupid. But making jokes like that with no irony and then maybe he apologizes at the end is so NOT OKAY HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT.
Okay I will stop reblogging this now.
What the actual fuck. How the hell did this game get past censors? An even more important question: what kind of soul-less asshole thought this was a good idea???
This practically made me cry. How could this ever be okay?
[Image: An illustration is labeled as a “partial birth abortion”. It shows a person performing an intact dilation and extraction, which is described at the bottom of the image: “The surgeon pulls the fetus into the breech position. He forced scissors into the skull, removes them and inserts a suction catheter through which he suctions out the skull contents.”]
I’m going to tell you a story that my tenth grade biology teacher told me.
So, my teacher had a friend. She was happily married, a Christian, and pregnant. She and her husband were extremely excited about the pregnancy and they couldn’t wait to be parents. She was pretty far along - probably about 7 month in. She went to get a check-up, and her doctor checked out the fetus. Well, it turns out her fetus had hydrochephalus. In this particular case, the fetus’s head had not and would not form enough to even hold the brain inside the skull. If the woman continued the pregnancy, she would give birth to a dead baby, and that’s if it didn’t die in utero and possibly cause sepsis before she had the opportunity to give birth.
So, and this was before the “partial birth abortion ban” was enacted (not when the story was told, but when it took place), the woman opted to get an intact dilation and extraction procedure (since that’s the proper medical term, “partial birth abortion” is a made up term and has no medical relevance).
Do you know what that allowed her to do? What that allows a lot of uterus-bearers in the same predicament to do?
She was able to hold her dead, intact fetus and mourn for it.
Now, she would have to get a procedure that literally rips the fetus apart, since apparently anti-choicers looking for a means to chip away at Roe v Wade think that this is a better alternative to the described procedure above. As the law currently stands, it is now impossible for people like the woman I described to have their fetuses aborted intact so that they can hold them like they wanted to. It is impossible for women like the one I described to have a body to mourn over.
So good job. Because you’re too ignorant to actually know why uterus-bearers get late-term abortion, specifically intact D & X procedures, you’ve essentially made it much harder for those that are experiencing the difficult choice to end a wanted pregnancy to mourn and move on.
But hey, go ahead and continue to consider yourself compassionate. I guess ignorance really is bliss, especially when you can hold up illustrations of medical procedures you don’t understand and hide behind them as if they have any meaning in the face of the reality that you refuse to acknowledge.
^^^ This seems to be the only story I ever hear about abortions performed this late. For some reason, you don’t ever hear about all those slutty women who just willy-nilly get third trimester abortions because lolfetus! that the anti-choicers keep going on about. They really should get on that. Perhaps they should reanimate zombie Reagan, he found that welfare mom with like 8 different welfare accounts and all those kids from different dads, didn’t he?
True story: uterus owners are NOT having abortions for fun! Abortion providers didn’t invent this procedure to have a cool new way to destroy fetuses. It’s so the parents can hold and mourn their baby. Nobody has an abortion this late in the pregnancy unless there’s a BIG problem.
I love how Pro-Life people make it sound like women are having abortions for shits and giggles. Like botox parties. Except abortion parties. Do you know how fucking HARD it is to even work up the nerve to get an abortion? These women have already been told that they are carrying a practically dead baby and now they have to choose whether to have it surgically removed or die from complications with birthing a still-born. How dare people say that they are doing this for selfish reasons?

Genuinely shaking with whatever emotion I am feeling right now. I know that I shouldn’t be surprised, but sometimes it still shocks me just how apathetic and uncaring and selfish people are. Seems silly to me that they care so much about making more babies, but are glad to render me infertile. Fucking lovely.
People are assholes. This is why I don’t buy into the Libertarian idea that private charities should be helping the poor. People are selfish and quick to say “you deserve it” or “you aren’t trying hard enough” or “I earned everything I have, obviously you have made terrible life decisions.”
I recently saw a guy on Tumblr post that poor people just abuse the healthcare system. He said something like “I’ve had illnesses myself, but I overcame them myself because I’m a strong person.” I was tempted to argue with him, but what’s the point?
PCOS is often not taken seriously and can get out of control if not treated. It’s a lady problem. The woman I befriended at the homeless shelter has PCOS and she has had two surgeries and several trips to the emergency room because of ruptured cysts. She may need a third surgery. She had to stop taking her medications because of Medicaid cuts, and I’m concerned. The cystadenoma I had years ago may have also been the result of improperly treated PCOS. I was diagnosed with it in 2003, but I have my doubts about the diagnosis. I don’t know if birth control pills would have helped (my last experience with BCPs was unpleasant), but regular exams certainly would have.
I was a temp receptionist with no insurance when I found out I had a potentially malignant tumor, and I only found out because I joined a drug study for extra cash. I could barely pay rent. It took months for me to find out that the growth was benign. The place I temped at hired me after six months, and after the pre-existing condition wait period passed for my insurance, I had surgery. It had grown even bigger in the time I waited —12 cm to 15 cm. I was in the hospital on Christmas because we all got a paid week off, and I couldn’t afford time off for surgery (I only got by because I worked a lot of overtime). The “pay for it yourself, just like the rest of us” argument is a bunch of crap, because what uninsured person can shell out $30,000 to remove an ovarian cystadenoma?
^^True life. “Pay for it yourself” is not an option for most people. Surgery is expensive as fuck.
I love that she calls the dude out on ovarian cysts.
And this is where you find the “pro-life” movement isn’t so…pro-life.
I am a feminist and I am totally pro-choice, but what’s funny is when you say that people assume that you are pro-abortion. I don’t love abortion but I want women to be able to choose and I don’t want white dudes in an office being able to make laws on things like this. I mean what are we going to do - go back to clothes hangers?
Ellen Page (via vanilla-owl)
Ellen Page was in a REALLY interesting movie called “Hard Candy” that i watched in a Women’s Studies class. If i find a [most likely illegal] link for it on the internet I’ll share [just don’t tell the government]
The Muslim woman as constructed by book covers designed to make white people feel better about themselves. Note two cases of the same image used twice.
I remember my professors at the AUC talking about how difficult it was to get published as an Arab female writer if they weren’t writing about either:
- oppression, or
- escaping oppression
Proof of that is above. God forbid there be some other story of interest to tell.
I’m actually noticing heavy exoticisation archetypes in the FONT chosen.
I made some new covers
For the discerning Muslim woman
I never realized how many of these kinds of books were published. JFC. Also ^^^^^^^ I LOVE THOSE NEW BOOK COVERS
Nope. Zero,” the president said to the speaker. Mr. Boehner tried again. “Nope. Zero,” Mr. Obama repeated. “John, this is it.” A long silence followed, said one participant in the meeting. “It was just like an awkward, ‘O.K., well, what do you do now?’
President Obama to Speaker Boehner about how much he would be willing to cut from Planned Parenthood funding. (via comeondontbullshitme)
This makes me happy. REMEMBER WHEN THE GOP TRIED TO HOLD WOMEN’S BODIES HOSTAGE AND OUR PRESIDENT WAS LIKE NOPE?
“OK, well, what do you do now?” You completely fucking screw over DC women, is what you do. Or at least, it’s what you did.

And I am livid. Thank god I am not a woman.
Clay speaks truth. There’s going to be a government shutdown just because the orange Power That Is doesn’t want my soon-to-be uninsured vag to have affordable medical care? Cute.
