now that it’s aired I can post some of the preliminary sketches I did for all the people populating the fire kingdom. It’s pretty rare that the designers get to get the first crack at drawing a bunch of characters before the story boarder do, and even rarer still that we get to explore a kingdom that we’ve never seen before, so i was really excited to jam on some ideas. There’s also some fire princess sketches I drew trying to nail down her final design. (rebecca did a few initial sketches of FP that I based these on) hope you all liked the episode.

Originally they gave Zuko long hair, like his father, to signify Zuko’s temptation to be like Ozai. But they changed it because they thought it looked too much like a mullet. So they cropped it shorter.

this is helpful but also kind of a lie? There are anime with young chubby characters and well as older oyaji and bara. You just kinda have to watch/read…not typical anime like k-on…I’m not saying that what this person is saying isn’t true. aaaa I’m bad with words I’m sorry.

- Two benders traveling with Korra - fire bender named Mako (named after Iroh’s late voice actor Mako Iwamatso), and an earthbender named Bolin (whose design is similar/based on the proto-Toph character before they decided to make Toph a girl). Mako is the brooding type, not as much as Zuko, and Bolin is the younger, goofier type. In one expression sheet he is reading a book titled, “How to Be a Man”
(They might be brothers? I cannot tell how the twitter source is using the word ‘brother’, as in actual siblings or just a term of endearment.)They are brothers, Mako is the older sibling.- City is called “United Republic”, founded by Zuko and Aang.
- Korra’s polar bear dog animal is female and named Naga.
- Paboo the red panda/ferret combo is called a fire ferret in the series, is Bolin’s buddy.
- Aang finds a herd of sky bison after the war. Slightly different design than Appa, “a way to update the design from Brian’s standpoint”
- New breed of flying lemur, but won’t see much of them in the first 12 episodes, but will have a bigger part in the second 14 eps.
- Aang and Katara had 3 children, youngest is an Airbender named Tezin (bearded airbender in the pictures)
- Tenzin has a family, and 3 kids, all airbenders. His wife’s name is Pemma, and is not a bender. Oldest child is named Jinora, youngest is named Meelo. (middle child is named Iki? going off context, here) “Tenzin is very serious but when his kids are crazy, he can be really funny, tries to be the “zen master” but loses his patience sometimes”
- Main antagonizing force are the Equalists, revolutionary fighting non-benders. Led by Avon?? (can’t be sure of the name, assuming he is the masked guy). Main henchmen are chi-blockers — Ty Lee’s discipline spread.
- METALBENDER COPS!!! Chief of police is Toph’s daughter. (No info of who she married or if there are other children.) Toph traveled world and taught earthbenders how to bend metal— rare ability, but are the elite SWAT team of Republic city. Have spools on their back that release and contract metal cables so they can zip around the city.
- “Pro-bending” teams of 3 benders (one of each discipline) against each other.
- Sifu Kisu is back for the show, same classic styles of martial arts in the show, in addition to mixed martial arts for pro-bending, bringing in professional fighter, influenced from “tricking” flashy martial arts styles.
- For music “What would is sound like in the 20’s if the Chinese invented Jazz?” Brian: We really need your guys continued help…to get the soundtrack. Encouraging us to CONTACT NICK and let them know we will buy it!
